About the Bundesliga

The Bundesliga is composed of 18 teams and follows a promotion and relegation system with the 2nd level Bundesliga. The season runs from August to May, with matches held on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. All Bundesliga clubs also compete in the DFB-Pokal cup, and the league champion qualifies for the DFL-Supercup.

Since its inception, 56 clubs have competed in the Bundesliga. Bayern Munich has dominated the league, claiming 32 of 60 titles, including the last 11 consecutive seasons—a European record. Other notable champions include Borussia Dortmund, Hamburger SV, Werder Bremen, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and VfB Stuttgart.

Ranked as one of Europe’s top national leagues, the Bundesliga holds third place in UEFA’s league coefficient rankings for the 2022–23 season, based on performance in European competitions over the last five years.

The Austrian Bundesliga, which started in the 1974–75 season, became a separate entity on December 1, 1991. Austria Wien and Rapid Wien have been the dominant teams, with Austria Wien securing 24 titles and Rapid Wien 32. The current champions, however, are Red Bull Salzburg.

On the international stage, Germany’s national team has lifted the FIFA World Cup four times—in 1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014—and has claimed the UEFA European Championship three times, in 1972, 1980, and 1996.
